The TANDEM, Escuela Internacional Summer Junior Program in Madrid, is a program oriented to youths between the ages of 14 to 17, who are learning Spanish and wish to have an enriching experience during 2, 3, or 4 weeks in Madrid, Spain.

ARRIVAL AND TRANSFERS
Who will meet me at the airport? A TANDEM staff member will meet you at the airport at the terminal at which your airplane arrives (TANDEM will already have your flight information). The staff member will hold up a sign with your name and the TANDEM logo and bring you by car or bus to the school.
What should the arrival time be? You should arrive between 09.00 and 18.00 the Sunday before the course begins. If you arrive a different day, or your flight arrives outside of this schedule, you will have to pay a separate transfer fee (50 euros one way).
Is there an emergency contact number? Yes, with the confirmation of enrollment, you will receive a name and number of a staff member who will be available in case of emergency. This telephone will be available 24 hours per day.

CORRESPONDENCE WITH YOUR FAMILY
Your parents will be able to call you, send you letters, faxes, or emails directly to our Center. The reception is open from 09.00 to 20.00. There is a mobile telephone number available 24 hours per day. If your parents would like to speak with you, they should respect the class hours and only call between 11.00 and 11.30. The school also provides free Internet access for all students.

HOUSING AND MEALS
Can I choose a different type of housing? Yes, if you would like, you can stay with a host family. Our host families have been carefully selected and are used to having international students in their homes. Here you will receive half-board; breakfast and lunch.
What are the meals like? The Spanish breakfasts normally consist of: a glass of juice, coffee, chocolate milk, or tea with a pastry, toast, or cereal.
The Spanish lunches are the heaviest meal of the day. A typical lunch will have two courses, the first course may be salad, gazpacho, or soup. The second plate is normally meat or fish, and the dessert consists of fruit or yogurt. If you require a special diet because of health or religious reasons, please make sure to note this on your application.
Breakfast will be served between 08.00 and 09.00 and lunch will be served between 14.00 and 15.30. The Spanish dinner is normally eaten at 21.00. It is usually light and may be a salad, omlette, sandwich, fruit, etc.
How does the laundry service work? Your clothes should already be labeled with your name (including socks and underwear). Once per week, your laundry will be collected and then returned to you the following day washed and ironed.
What are the rules for the curfew? If you are under 18 years of age, you should be at the residence or host families between 23.00 and 24.00 with permission from your parents or advisors. If you are over 18, you are free to arrive when you please, keeping in mind that during the week the normal bedtime is 12.00 and the weekends a bit later.
Smoking is not permitted in the school or in the residence. It is strictly prohibited to consume drugs. If a student does not abide by these rules, they will be expelled from the program and returned to their home at their own expense

CLASSES
How will I get from my residence to school? There is a metro station at the door of the residence. You can arrive to our Center in 15 minutes. Also, you could take a bus which would take a bit longer. The metro is open from 6 a.m. in the morning until 2 a.m. in the morning.
What is the class schedule? The classes will take place in two blocks. The first block from 09.30 to 11.00, then a 30 minute break to relax in the garden or have a drink, and the second block from 11.30 to 13.00.
What are the classes and the professors like? In TANDEM we work with the communicative meted. In other words, the classes are fundamentally directed to the spoken communication, in order to help you improve your fluency and competence in the most common communicative situations. Therefore, we encourage active participation of the students and primarily work on oral skills and auditory comprehension.
How will I be assigned a level? The Sunday of your arrival we will ask you to complete an oral and written level test. With this test, we will form groups distributing students according to the European Reference levels: A1. A2. B1. B2, C1. C2. The fundamental criteria will be your knowledge, and surely you will be placed in a group with students of your age, although perhaps you could be placed in a group with a range of ages.
Will I receive a certificate? Of course, at the end of the course you will fill out an evaluation form about the course, the housing, the cultural activities, etc. and we will give you a certificate detailing the hours, level and dates of the course.

WHAT TO BRING
What do I have to bring? It is not necessary for you to bring books, although it is always helpful to have a dictionary. You will need a notebook and pen. Our Centre will provide everything else. The books and materials will be adapted to your level and age.
Do I need to bring money? You will need money for the metro pass and bus tickets. The price of the course includes the cultural activities and entrance fees, therefore you will only need money for your personal expenses such as drinks, snacks, etc. We recommend that you bring approximately 100 per week
Can I leave my valuables in a safe place? We recommend that students leave their original passport and any other valuables in the safe in our office. You should make a photocopy of your passport to carry with you. You should not carry all of your money with you nor leave valuables in the classroom.
What type of clothes will I need? You should bring light summer clothes. Madrid is quite hot during the summer, between 30 and 40 degrees centigrade. It is also important that you bring:
- Bathing suit and towel - Sunglasses - Comfortable shoes for walking around the city and possibly hiking - Protective suntan cream

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE AND INSURANCE
What happens if I get sick? The TANDEM staff will attend to you immediately. You should bring with you a copy of your personal insurance that will cover the medical expenses. Upon your return, your medical insurance should reimburse you. There is a medical clinic very close to the school and we also have contacts with specialists.
Insurance It is mandatory to have insurance to cover illness, loss of luggage, loss of classes, civil responsibility, and medical attention. Please bring the corresponding documentation.
How do I make the reservation? Once you have made the reservation you will receive confirmation within 24 hours. Afterwards, you will have to make a deposit of 120 Euros (if you need a Visa, you will have to pay for the entire course). One the deposit is received you will receive a final confirmation. Along with the confirmation we will attach the bill and an information packet about the course and housing.
What if I need a VISA? If you need a visa, we will attach an official invitation with the confirmation. In order to send this invitation, we would require the payment of the course in full.
