SPRING ACADEMIC SEMESTER 2005

This past Spring TANDEM hosted a group of 20 students from various North American universities. During a four month home-stay, students dramatically improved their command of the Spanish language by attending both intensive language classes as well as elective classes. Students were able to choose from a variety of courses including: Contemporary Spanish Cinema, History of Spain, Current Events in Spain, Spanish Literature, and Art History. TANDEM´s cultural program enhanced the overall learning experience by offering a multitude of cultural events, guided museum visits, city walking tours, and all day excursions to near-by cities. This semester's students exhibited a strong desire to integrate into the daily Spanish life. Some even participated in Flamenco classes and demonstrated their new talent at the farewell dinner! ¡Olé!

Spring Academic Semester 2005 plus Internship

We were excited to welcome back one Erskine student from the previous year and receive a new Clark student to join TANDEM´s successful internship program. Due to both students high or native level of Spanish, they were able to gain practical work experience within their field of study in a Spanish company. A great way to spruce up your resume! Michael looked dapper in his suit and tie as he made his way to the Madrid Stock Exchange. Christy was a fantastic addition to the staff at FOROCIO where she learned valuable skills in marketing, public relations and the travel industry. Students also participated in a Business Spanish class to solidify the theoretical with the practical skills.

Education Academic Semester 2005

In May, Tandem proudly graduated 3 Illinois College students from the highly successful Education Academic Semester for Spanish Majors. This is a specially designed course for students who are going to be Spanish Foreign language teachers and who require specific theoretical and practical training, including seminars in the Communicative Method. Carrie, Tara, and Monica worked very hard in the methodology and in the practical classes. As a final project they compiled a portfolio of materials in which they will be able to utilize in an actual classroom setting. All three students left Tandem feeling tremendously satisfied with the courses they had received and confident to pursue a teaching career in Spanish as a Foreign Language.

Verano Español 2005

Another triumphant Verano Español with students from Rollins College in Florida. Summer 2005 brought 15 students to TANDEM´s 6 week summer intensive program.

In only a month and a half, students significantly progressed in their Spanish communication skills and abilities to be able to use the Spanish language outside of the classroom. What a fantastic way to earn 6 credits and have an amazing experience in Madrid!

Cultural highlights of this summer´s program included day trips to Segovia and El Escorial, as well as the annual weekend trip to Candelario. Anyone remember what a Batipuerta is?

AP Program

TANDEM is among a select group of CEELE-accredited schools chosen to host U.S. high school students in a uniquely designed program in order to prepare for the Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish language exam. This program is in collaboration with Eduespaña and the Education Office at the Emabassy of Spain in Washington D.C.

Students took part in a three week homestay, attended specially tailored classes, as well as participated in a cultural program exclusively conceived to fit the needs of this age group.
