TANDEM Academic Semester internship

This Program is intended for Business and International Studies majors with a strong knowledge of Spanish who wish to combine an academic program abroad with work experience. Good command of Spanish is required, both written and spoken.

Program Overview

This Program is intended for Business and International Studies majors with a strong knowledge of Spanish who wish to combine an academic program abroad with work experience. Good command of Spanish is required, both written and spoken.

Applicants must have the equivalent level of Spanish to that required by the Diploma Básico of the Instituto Cervantes. In order to verify this level, TANDEM will send all applicants a written level test as well as carry out an oral exam by phone before definitive admittance to the program is given. This is perhaps the most important aspect of the application process, given that, logically, the companies that host interns are looking for trained and knowledgeable workers who can contribute from day one.

Other skills, such as computer knowledge, are also required for most internship positions. Candidates should be independent, mature, responsible and flexible, and with the ability to adapt to new situations.

The program is one semester in duration, from August to December or from January to April. During the first month, the intern will also attend the multinational and multilingual language lessons 3 hours per day at TANDEM. This initial immersion helps interns to fine-tone their language skills, thus making adaptation to the workplace all the easier.

During the remaining three months, the intern will attend an elective of his/her choice, although students participating in the Internship Program are recommended to take either Professional Spanish or Business Spanish.

Interns normally work from 12 to 20 hours per week, depending on the company. These hours may be completed in two or three days, or over a five-day workweek. The intern will meet every 2 weeks with an Internship Adviser from TANDEM to discuss the progress of the internship, exchange opinions and complete a written assignment which will serve as a diary of his/her intercultural and work experiences. Finally, all interns must complete a final project reflecting on their experience.

Students participating in this Program are required to take part in at least one activity per week offered through TANDEM’s Cultural Program, and if requested, will be paired with a TANDEM-Partner for language exchanges.
