TANDEM Academic Semester
The University Program at TANDEM, Escuela Internacional is designed for those university students, primarily juniors, who have already taken some Spanish courses at their high school or university and wish to improve their skills and broaden their linguistic and cultural knowledge through an academic experience abroad.

Language Courses
Upon arrival at TANDEM, all students are given a level test. They are then placed in classes according to their ability. These classes are made up of participants of varying nationalities and whose one common language is Spanish. Classes are given from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Placement in one or more of these courses is based on the student’s score on the initial language test and not on his/her performance in classes taken previously.
Spanish 111 - 112.
Initial courses, intensive Spanish I and II.

Basic knowledge of Spanish explained using a practical and communicative method that allows for correct language usage in every-day situations.
Classes use communication models, role playing, guided grammar exercises, essays, discussions and debates. |
Spanish 129 - 130.
Initial courses, intensive Spanish III and IV.
|
Further study of the basic concepts of Spanish which, presented through a practical and communicative approach, allow for correct language usage in every-day situations.
Classes use broader communication models, role playing, guided and free grammar exercises, discussions, and debates on general topics. |
Spanish 221 - 222.
Initial courses, intensive intermediate Spanish I and II.

Intermediate knowledge of Spanish taught using a communicative methodology based on practicality, allowing for correct communication in general situations.
Classes use Real-life situations, different communication situations, directed and free grammar exercises, written compositions, discussions and debates. |
Spanish 229 - 230.
Initial courses, intensive intermediate Spanish III and IV.

Strengthening of previously acquired knowledge of Spanish employing a practical, communicative approach which allows for efficient communication in all situations.
Real-life situations, different communication situations, directed and free grammar exercises, written compositions, discussions and debates on the cultural and social realities in Spanish and the students’ countries are covered.
Development of the ability to quickly and efficiently understand every-day messages and the correct expression of such messages. |
Spanish 281.
Intensive Spanish conversation courses.

Improvement of oral and comprehension skills which permit fluid communication, development of vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation necessary for good intercommunication. Discussion of topics of the students’ choice. |
Spanish 311 - 312.
Intensive advanced Spanish courses I and II.
|
Advanced knowledge of Spanish which, in accordance with the experience and previous knowledge of the students and based on a communicative approach, allows for good communication in general and specific situations.
Real-life communication, different communication situations, exercises focusing on acquiring and analysis of the most complicated aspects of Spanish grammar, written compositions, discussions, debates on the cultural reality of Spain and the students’ countries, and complex expressions are covered.
Development of the ability to quickly and efficiently understand every-day messages and the correct expression of such messages. |
Spanish 329 - 330.
Intensive advanced Spanish courses III and IV.

Improvement of advanced knowledge of Spanish which, in accordance with the experience and previous knowledge of the students and based on a communicative approach, allows for good communication in general and specific situations.
Real-life communication, different communication situations, exercises focusing on acquiring and analysis of the most complicated aspects of Spanish grammar, written compositions, discussions, debates on the cultural reality of Spain and the students’ countries, and complex expressions are covered.

Spanish 429 - 430.
Intensive courses, perfection of Spanish III and IV.

Strengthening and perfection of levels and capabilities in Spanish which, by reviewing all knowledge acquired by the student and increasing real communicative contexts, allows for perfect communication in any given situation.
Real-life situations using different levels of communication, different situations, in-depth study of all points of Spanish grammar, long and elaborate compositions, discussions and debates, and complex expressions are covered.
Development of the ability to understand normal and specific messages. Improvement of immediate translation capabilities and interpretation of texts. |
